First Steps for Study Abroad

  1. Students should identify goals and priorities for a study abroad experience – choosing a study abroad program
  2. Learn about the types of study abroad programs available
  3. Attend a Study Abroad General Advising Session (Required for Semester/Year-Long Programs)
  4. Review Program Options and begin Academic Planning
    • Students should review their degree audit to determine the type of courses ideal to take abroad and how planned courses abroad will fulfill degree requirements.
    • Discuss plans for study abroad with an academic advisor.
    • Meet with the departmental coordinator of advising to determine how study abroad courses will transfer and to complete the course approval form (required for semester study abroad and non-NC State programs).
  5. Study Abroad Individual Advising Appointment
    1. Semester and Year-Long Programs
      1. Students must first attend a general advising session (step 3 above) and complete the general advising worksheet online.
      2. Call 919.515.2089 or stop by the Study Abroad Office to schedule an appointment.
      3. Come prepared with questions about the program and to learn more specifics about the program and the study abroad process.
    2. Summer and Short-Term Programs
      1. Email the faculty director with any questions and/or to show interest.
  6. Apply Online
    • Click on the “apply now” link on the program page to begin an application.
    • Applications typically include short answer essays, recommendations, and course approvals.  Begin the application at least a month in advance to meet the program deadline.
