Visa and Immigration Process

Most incoming exchange students will need to apply for a J-1 exchange visa in order to study at NC State. In order to apply for a J-1 visa, students will need a DS-2019.

REQUESTING A DS-2019

Students will be able to complete the steps to request their DS-2019 through Global Home once they have been given a Unity ID. In order to request a DS-2019, students will be asked to provide biographical information, their passport, and proof of funding. Once approved, DS-2019s will be included in acceptance packets sent out by the Study Abroad Office.

APPLYING FOR A J-1 STUDENT VISA

Once students receive their physical acceptance documents, they can apply for their student visa. It is then the student’s responsibility to apply to a U.S. Consulate or Embassy for a visa. More information about how to apply for a student visa can be found here.

REQUIRED IMMIGRATION CHECK-IN

During orientation, an important meeting will be scheduled with the Office of International Services. All students must attend this check-in to maintain their visa status.
