Costs & Scholarships

Many students and their families are eager to learn more about the costs of studying abroad. While costs will vary from program to program, the Study Abroad Office makes information about anticipated expenses, as well as scholarship and funding opportunities, readily available.

Consider asking your student

  • Have you attended a funding session offered by the Study Abroad Office to learn more about financial aid and scholarship resources?
  • Have you consulted your study abroad program’s online budget sheet to better understand the billable and out-of-pocket expenses?
  • Do you know when the application deadline is to apply for scholarships from the Study Abroad Office?
  • If you receive a Federal Pell Grant, have attended a Gilman Scholarship information meeting to learn more about this outside funding opportunity?

These questions were created to help guide your conversations about costs and how you and your student can plan effectively. As families and support systems, feel free to explore the curated resources below to learn more about the costs and funding opportunities associated with studying abroad. If your student has a question regarding this information, encourage them to contact their financial aid counselor or study abroad advisor directly.

Early, proactive planning for study abroad is essential; especially in regards to understanding costs and possible funding opportunities. The Study Abroad Office, in collaboration with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, regularly offers funding sessions for students to provide an overview of anticipated costs and financial aid/scholarships. These informational meetings are open to all students regardless of whether they have begun a study abroad program application or not.

The Study Abroad Office offers a streamlined scholarship application process, for which all students are encouraged to apply. Application cycles are determined by students’ study abroad program term (Spring, Fall, Summer, etc.) and usually open several months ahead of the application deadline, providing students ample time to complete and submit their online scholarship application.

Students are eligible to receive financial aid towards the cost of any study abroad program if the courses fulfill degree requirements and the student is taking the equivalent of a full course load at NC State. Students are encouraged to work closely with their financial aid counselor to better understand how their financial aid awards may apply to the costs of a study abroad program.

In addition to the NC State sponsored scholarships and financial aid for studying abroad, there are several opportunities for external funding for study abroad available to students, such as the Gilman Scholarship Program (for Federal Pell Grant recipients).

Students participating on an NC State sponsored study abroad program can anticipate the program fee to be billed to their NC State student account and are subject to Study Abroad Office policies for payment and withdrawal.
