Review Student Applications

For instructions on how to review student applications via the PackAbroad Portal, please watch the video down below; you may also follow along by reading the text instructions provided.

Step 1: Login to PackAbroad, the NC State Study Abroad application system

Step 2: You should land on your “Reviewer Console” homepage, but if not, go to the menu in the top left to navigate to the Reviewer Console view (see screenshot below)

Step 3: This will take you straight to Pending Reviews where all applications that need to be reviewed are listed. Once they are reviewed, they will move to the tab on the right labeled “Submitted Reviews”

Step 4: Open each student’s application individually to review short answer essays, SIS information (GPA, credits completed), unofficial transcript, and recommendation (if required)

  • Note: If there are multiple Program Directors or leaders, you will be able to see their acceptance decisions if they have already made one.

Step 5: Select your reviewer recommendation, “accept/reject/defer/waitlist” at the bottom of the student’s application. If a student is rejected, you will be asked to provide any comments if that could be shared with the student. Reviewer recommendations are only visible to the program coordinator, not to applicants. Please see the definitions for each decision:

  • Accept: Student is ready to be offered a spot on the program
  • Reject: Student will not be offered a spot on the program and will not be considered for this program during this cycle
  • Defer (summer early action only): Student may be qualified but we need to see the remaining applicants before admitting the student to the program. The student will be considered again during the regular admission decision date
  • Waitlist: Student is well qualified but, due to the competition of the applicant pool and space availability, will not be admitted at this time. Students can stay on the waitlist in the case that another spot opens up prior to the program

Step 6: Mark your review as completed by selecting the Submit button

  • Decision notifications will be made by the program coordinator after completing a conduct check, verifying GPA requirement, and referring to the program director recommendation

Step 7: Reviewers will automatically return to a list of applicants with pending reviews

For those programs that receive more qualified applicants than the program has space, we strongly recommend a waitlist to help address student attrition:

  • When reviewing applications, we encourage program directors to consider academic fit, class standing, quality of the application, merit, and with rolling admissions, you might include date completed. A rubric may be helpful for over-enrolled programs.
  • Please connect with your program coordinator to determine the appropriate number of students to place on a waitlist.
  • The Study Abroad Office will reach out to any students not accepted (but qualified to study abroad) and on the waitlist to help them identify alternate study abroad opportunities.
  • The Study Abroad Office will maintain a waitlist through the program payment deadline (early April for summer programs).

Please familiarize yourself with the Withdraw and Refund policy.
