Why did you choose to study abroad?
I chose to study abroad to compliment my educational experiences I had at NC State during the first three years. I wanted to explore what it would be like to learn about architecture in the context of a different country, climate, and design philosophy. I also saw it as a great way to practice and develop my Spanish critical thinking, comprehension and communication skills.
What did you learn about yourself?
I learned that the most enriching and meaningful experiences are on the other side of my comfort zone, and that I’m capable of pursuing them. My experiences also taught me about how much my relationships mean to me, as I made it a priority to stay in touch with my loved ones. Lastly, I learned that I love to dance salsa.
What was one of your favorite parts of your program?
One standout part of my semester was attending the Independence Day parades on September 15th. Feeling the music from the school bands marching by and the energy of the crowds was an exciting experience. I learned a lot about Costa Rican culture and heritage, which only added to the richness of the program.
What advice do you have to future study abroad students?
I would say the most important thing is to go with an open mind. There are so many new and different customs, foods, and people and it’s important to respect them as you explore and take on a different rhythm of life. Be willing to learn and appreciate other people’s perspectives and way of life.

How were your classes abroad different than if you would have taken them at NC State? Did you take any field trips or do anything outside of the traditional classroom?
One aspect that was different than my learning experience at NC State was the design studio class setup. Here, I’m accustomed to having one professor per class. The design studio class I took in Costa Rica was helmed by four professors, and my classmates included a mix of students in their third and fourth years of architecture school, compared to having a homogeneous cohort here at State. We also took two field trips to sites across the country to study and understand different urban conditions.

Would you do it again?
I would do it again tomorrow if I could. It was one of the most meaningful and fulfilling few months of my life so far. It was more than worth it to take the leap and go.
