Why did you choose to study abroad?

I chose to study abroad during my MBA program because I had the fortune to complete a semester abroad during undergrad. The semester I spent in France was one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life and definitely a highlight of my time in college. From the people you meet to the cultural experiences, it is something I would recommend everyone try to do. Because of this It was an easy decision to join this program traveling to Brazil, which was so different from anywhere I had been before. It was a chance to see a new part of the world and meet new people.

What did you learn about yourself?

I learned that I had biases about South America and even Brazil specifically that were likely gained from movies/tv shows or social media that largely weren’t true. Brazil was an amazing country that while developing, is still in many ways similar to the U.S. and has a uniquely shared history. This trip opened my eyes to these biases and help me to shake them.

What was one of your favorite parts of your program?

My favorite part of the program was visiting some of the companies there to see how they were prioritizing sustainability. This was the main purpose of the trip but it was actually very interesting to see how with limited capital or social investment these companies are still making every effort to be sustainable. Specifically Ambev, South America’s largest beverage supplier. We were able to walk through their factory and see in action how they consider the environment.

What advice do you have to future study abroad students?

My advice to students looking to study abroad would be to make the most of the experience. This may sound cliche but saying yes to things outside of your normal comfort zone, or going to museums or restaurants you wouldn’t normally try is how you truly experience the culture. I found that some of my best memories were from trips or events that I never anticipated going in.

How did your study abroad experience prepare you for your future career?

This course specifically helped me to prepare for a career in sustainability in many ways. The most important being able to see sustainability practices in person for multiple companies in a number of industries. While there are some similarities, having this hands-on knowledge will undoubtedly come in handy down the road when I am having to make similar decisions.

Would you do it again?

Yes, without a doubt.
