Spring, RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia

Major/Minor:

Fashion and Textile Management Major

Why did you choose to study abroad?

I really enjoy traveling the idea as well of being able to go somewhere I have never been alone and experience a new culture and see how America is views is very interesting to me. I wanted to push myself to my limits seeing how much I could grow. I wanted to see more of the world and explore for myself all different things.

How did you pick your program?

I knew that I wanted to go to Australia since I was a freshman. I have always wanted to travel that far and with it being such a long flight I thought spending 4 months there would be the best option. I chose to be at RMIT in Melbourne for their textile program already being well known and seeing very interesting to me. Melbourne is one of the major cities so I also knew there would be tons of things to do in and around the city.

What was something you learned about yourself? How are you different? How are you the same? Or, what did you realize about your own culture by living in another one?

I found that I put a lot of pressure on myself when I am at home and school. Being able to do whatever I wanted and be who I am all the time was different. I am still the same person but now I feel about to be that personal all the time. I changed by being way more laid back about situations. I realized how fast everything moves at home and school and how somethings are okay to delay and taking time for yourself is very important.

What advice would you give to another student?

I would tell other students to go way out of there comfort zone and do things that make you uncomfortable and uneasy. Though also to always take care of yourself first and do whatever you need. Last that there are so many opportunities and people out there that may change your life and brooder you’re understanding.

How did your study abroad experience prepare you for your future career?

It showed me even more of what is out there. I took an ethics class as well for fashion, and that showed me how the things I care about, I want in all parts of my life. I meet many amazing people looking to do similar things, as well as talking to them about that helped ease my mind, thinking it will be possible.

How were your classes abroad different than if you would have taken them at NC State? Did you take any field trips or do anything outside of the traditional classroom?

The classes abroad were way more relaxed, giving more time to focus on the major assignment as well, for classmates to be able to work. My one class went on a trip to the city to visit some places that had Zines. This was to help us with our final project that we were working on.

How did you connect with locals and/or meet local friends?

I joined a salsa dancing club that allowed me to meet many students from Australia whom I became friends and learned more about. Visiting one of the same places every week helped me get to know how they work. I would talk to shop owners and people at markets to see how they liked Australia and learn about the culture.

How did you budget for your time abroad? Are there scholarships or grants that you would recommend applying for? Did you spend more or less than you thought?

I saved for the last 3 years to make sure I had the money I wanted I would suggest applying for anything you can. I spent a little bit more than I was expected but was also willing to spend even more for experiences. I tried to cook most days and then eat out once or twice a week,

How safe did you feel there? And/or where did you find support to navigate ay challenges you faced abroad?

Making friends who became my support system. But mainly looking to myself and looking out others who would then do the same for me.

Would you do it again?

I would absolutely do it again! It was one of the best experiences and the people I met will absolutely be lifelong friends.
