International Travel Gateway

Travel Safely, Experience More

What is the International Travel Gateway?

The International Travel Gateway is for NC State students who are traveling abroad for a conference, research, service learning, honors/scholars activities, student club, athletic team, NC State Arts, or any other non-credit-bearing, University-affiliated purpose. Registration is required so that the University can provide health and safety support to students abroad (REG 02.55.01).

How Do I Register?

  1. To register, use the red button above to login to the Gateway portal. Enter your travel dates and destination.
  2. Check the U.S. Department of State advisory for your destination. If it is a Level 3 or 4 location, review the University’s Restricted Travel Policy, and submit your Gateway registration at least 4-6 weeks before your departure date.
  3. Provide your emergency contact information, upload a photo of your passport, and download the AlertTraveler app.
  4. You will receive a confirmation email upon submission. The University will automatically enroll you in international health insurance. BCBS Global will email you your details prior to departure.

Why Should I Register My Travel?

Emergency Response Services

Registering your travel allows our Emergency Response Team to contact, locate, and provide you with incident assistance in the event of an emergency.

Access to AlertTraveler

The Gateway provides you with access to a security notification and communication system called AlertTraveler.

International Health Insurance

You will be enrolled in comprehensive international health insurance, which includes telehealth, mental health care, and evacuation services.

Who Should Not Register?

  • Students participating in traditional Study Abroad programs should not register their travel in the Gateway.
  • Students traveling for personal reasons should not enter the Gateway.
  • Faculty and staff should not register with the Gateway. Instead, they should refer to the Controller’s Office Travel Center and may obtain business traveler’s insurance through the Office of Insurance and Risk Management.

International Group Travel

If you are a faculty/staff leader traveling internationally with a student group for non-credit activities, please email the International Gateway Template to [email protected]. Our office will then create individual registration applications for your students. Once this process is complete, student travelers will be directed to log in to the Gateway and finalize their applications.

Departmental Support

If a department or other party wishes to pay a student’s insurance bill, they may do so via Third-party Student Sponsorships (GA-1 form). If you have any questions, email [email protected].

Visa/Immigration Appointments

Please inform our office within 2-3 weeks of your visa appointment to allow enough time to complete your insurance enrollment.
