How to Apply
Studying abroad is an exciting and transformative experience, but it requires planning and preparation. To ensure a smooth application process, consider your academic and personal goals, explore program options, review eligibility requirements, research funding, and track important deadlines. Plan to spend about three to four weeks completing your application.
Step 1: Complete Study Abroad 101
All students must complete Study Abroad 101, where you’ll learn how to search for programs and understand financing options.
Step 2: Explore Program Options
Find programs that align with your academic and personal goals. Use the Program Search tool, explore options by Area of Study, and review courses, costs, and eligibility. Have questions? Contact us or visit during walk-in advising hours.
Step 3: Meet with Your Academic Advisor
Discuss how your chosen program fits into your degree plan. Some programs (those with transfer credit) require a Course Approval Form. Watch this video for step-by-step guidance.
Step 4: Consider Finances
Studying abroad is affordable! Many students use a mix of financial aid, scholarships, and personal funds. Compare program costs with staying on campus and consult the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid for guidance.
Step 5: Start Your Program-Specific Application
- Semester & Academic Year Programs: Click “Apply Now” on the program page to begin. You’ll complete Study Abroad 101 (if not already done) and an Advising Worksheet before scheduling an individual advising appointment to discuss program details and funding opportunities.
- NC State Group Programs: Click “Apply Now” and submit short essays, a transcript, and an application fee. Some programs may require a recommendation letter or an interview.
- Affiliate & Third-Party Programs: Apply directly to the provider and submit an NC State Affiliate/Third-Party application. Advising is optional but encouraged
Step 6: Review Deadlines & Submit Your Application
Keep track of application deadlines and complete all PackAbroad requirements. Don’t forget to hit “Submit” when your application is ready!
Step 7: Commit & Pay the Study Abroad Fee
Once accepted, you’ll have two weeks to confirm your participation and pay the Study Abroad Fee.
Step 8: Apply to the Host Institution or Program Provider
For exchange, direct enroll, affiliate, or third-party programs, you’ll also need to complete an application with your host institution.
- Exchange/Direct Enroll Programs: Apply after being accepted through NC State’s PackAbroad system. Your study abroad advisor will provide details.
- Affiliate & Third-Party Programs: Deadlines vary with providers, and some may be before NC State’s deadlines. Check early! Your PackAbroad application must be completed before NC State can process authorization forms for your provider.
