Alternate Programs
Students can also choose to study abroad through any accredited third-party service provider, which offer additional high-quality programs worldwide. If you are studying abroad with a third-party provider that we are not affiliated with, please complete our general alternate application for the corresponding term.
How to Apply
Advising & Selecting a Program
We encourage you to meet with a study abroad advisor to review options, the application process, and support.

Academic Credit
- You can earn transfer credit for your affiliate or alternate program.
- Course approvals must be documented in advance as part of your PackAbroad application to ensure the courses fulfill your NC State degree requirements.

Program Costs & Payment
- You’ll pay an application and study abroad fee to NC State through PackAbroad.
- Mandatory, low-cost NC State international insurance will be billed through your NC State student account; no tuition is owed to NC State.
- All other program fees are paid directly to the program provider with no tuition paid to NC State.

Financial Aid & Scholarships
- NC State Study Abroad scholarships can be used for alternate study abroad programs, but you must meet the earlier application deadline.
- You can use your NC State financial aid and scholarships toward alternate study abroad programs as long as you’re enrolled in a full-time course load that counts toward your degree.
- Financial aid will be disbursed directly to the student. NC State financial aid and scholarships will disburse according to the University billing calendar regardless of your program start date and will not disburse early. This may mean that students will pay to their program provider first and then be reimbursed by financial aid later.
- Most program providers have their own scholarships. Review scholarships, along with costs, and apply for program-specific scholarships by their noted deadlines.
Applying
- Participation requires a two-step application process.
- First, students apply to the alternate program directly. Be sure to review any eligibility requirements set by the program provider
- Second, students complete an NC State application to maintain NC State enrollment, approve transfer credit, provide eligibility for financial aid and scholarships and ensure University support.
- Students complete a Course Approval Form with your academic department to confirm how your courses will apply to your degree. Learn more about Course Approvals.
- Important: Deadlines for alternate programs can differ from NC State deadlines. We recommend starting the course approval form process of the application two to three weeks before the NC State deadline. Some providers also require institutional approval from NC State — your study abroad advisor can help once your PackAbroad application is submitted. If their deadline is before our deadline, please complete your PackAbroad application and then reach out to us.
