Some graduate students study abroad and receive academic credit. The opportunities listed below should be used if you plan to earn credit for your international experience.

Graduate Research or Conference Attendance Abroad

Students traveling abroad outside of a formal credit opportunity may submit their itinerary through the International Travel Gateway. Activities and research abroad are usually arranged between an NC State faculty member and an NC State graduate student and does not go through any formal institutional review or approval process. Graduate students who plan to pursue research abroad as part of their degree should complete this application.

Group programs offering graduate-level credit

Some NC State group study abroad programs are either designed for graduate students or allow the option of receiving graduate-level credit for some of the courses offered.
If you are interested in participating in a study abroad program, we recommend contacting your academic advisor to see how it might fulfill your degree requirements.

Independent Study / Research Abroad

Graduate students may participate in an independent study or graduate research experience abroad. Participants make special arrangements with a faculty member to earn academic credit for the experience; the Study Abroad Office does not have a formal approval process. Note: This application is not intended for any student traveling with an NC State-affiliated group, or any other organized study abroad programs.
