Need-Based Scholarships
Chancellors icon4Chancellor’s Scholarship
Award amount- $2,500
Cycles Available- All
Criteria- FAFSA need level, essay scores, underrepresented students
Requirements- Mandatory training session, presentations to own self-identified underrepresented group, attendance of the Chancellor’s Reception in spring
Summary- The Chancellor’s scholarships are the premier awards administered by our office. Recipients are selected by a Study Abroad Office committee with a focus on high need level and strong essays. This scholarship is primarily directed to students from underrepresented categories including ethnicity, gender (male), major (STEM), and first generation students.

Powers IconDavid & Shreita Powers Study Abroad Scholarship
Award amount- $2,000
Cycles Available- Spring
Criteria- Any college, FAFSA need level, essay scores
Requirements- None, invitation to meet with donors
Summary- A generous gift from David M. and Shreita T. Powers provides an award of $2,000 for a spring cycle applicant. This student must have significant financial need and demonstrate strong communication skills above and beyond other applicants. Upon returning from abroad the recipient will be invited to meet with the donors.

Requirements- Attendance of the annual Global Engagement Expo
Summary- A generous gift from the Jackson Rigney family provides three awards of $1,000 to students applying during the fall cycle. Recipients will be required to attend the Global Engagement Expo in the spring where they will receive awards and meet the Rigney family.

College or Depatment-Based Scholarships
HSS Icon2Humanities and Social Sciences Scholarships
Award amount- $1,000 to $1,500
Cycles Available- All
Criteria- 3.0 GPA, H&SS students only, essays and need will be considered. All applicants for H&SS scholarships must have an NCSU faculty member or advisor certify that they have met with the student to discuss the student’s study abroad plans. This must occur before the scholarship application has been submitted.
Requirements- Blogging is required for many H&SS awards, additional requirements are at the discretion of the H&SS scholarship committee
Summary- H&SS administers several scholarships including the International Connections Award, the Sharda and Mohan Sawhney Study Abroad Scholarship, the Susan Carter Global Endowment Scholarship, the Laura Roy and Lynn Daniel Travel Award, and the Paula G. Cothren Global Scholarship. Indicating that you would like to apply for H&SS scholarships will allow you to be considered for all, provided you are an eligible student. Most awards require the recipient to engage in blogging activity while abroad. Recipients will be chosen by the H&SS scholarship committee.
 
Felner IconL.I. Felner Scholarship for Foreign Language and Literatures
Award amount- $1,000
Cycles Available- Spring and summer
Criteria- 3.0 GPA, FLL students only
Requirements- Discretion of the FLL scholarship committee
Summary- The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures administers two awards of $1,000 for FLL students. Recipients will be chosen based upon the strength of their essays.

Award amount- $1,000

Criteria- 3.25 GPA, College of Engineering students only
Requirements- Discretion of the COE scholarship committee
Summary- The College of Engineering will determine recipients from the eligible applicant pool based on essay strength. Preference will be given to full-time undergraduates with demonstrated experience in leadership positions and/or those who demonstrate drive to excel in future goals through integrating high impact experiences such as internships co-ops, service, and research.
 
CED IconCollege of Education Scholarships
Award amount- $500 to $1,000

Criteria- 3.0 GPA, full-time students, College of Education students only
Requirements- Discretion of the CED scholarship committee
Summary- College of Education award recipients will be determined based on the strength of their essays. Preference will be given to students that have actively participated in College of Education clubs and organizations.
 
CNR iconCollege of Natural Resources
Award amount- $500 to $1,000
Cycles Available- Spring and Summer
Criteria- College of Natural Resources students only. Applicants must be majoring in and making progress towards a degree in a CNR program.
Requirements- Discretion of the CNR scholarship committee.
Summary- CNR will determine recipients from the eligible applicant pool based on essay strength, GPA, fit between planned study abroad and degree program, and financial need. Highest priority given to CNR students participating in study abroad programs led by CNR faculty.  Preference will be given to full-time undergraduates who will have completed at least one semester at NCSU when they begin study abroad and who plan to spend at least one year at NCSU after completing study abroad.
 
pineDepartment of Forestry & Environmental Resources
Award amount– $500 to $1,000
Cycles Available– All
Criteria– DFER students only. Applicants must be majoring and making progress rowards a degree in DFER (including FOM, NR, FW, ET, ES).
Requirements– DFER provides scholarships from departmental funds and from a gift fund established by Sunny and Lee Allen.  Students who receive support from the Allen fund will be notified and expected to send a letter or postcard to the Allens reporting on their study abroad experience.  All students are encouraged to submit blog posts and photos for the DFER website.
Summary- DFER will determine recipients from the eligible applicant pool based on essay strength, GPA, fit between planned study abroad and degree program, and financial need. Highest priority given to DFER students participating in study abroad programs led by DFER faculty.  Preference will be given to full-time undergraduates who will have completed at least one semester at NCSU when they begin study abroad and who plan to spend at least one year at NCSU after completing study abroad.
 
grantjohnstonPoole College of Management- W. Grant Johnston Award
Award amount– $1,500
Cycles Available– Fall
Criteria– Poole College of Management major students only, In-state students only
Requirements– Scholarship recipients are expected to send a postcard or letter to the donor while they are studying abroad.
Summary- Inspired by his own study abroad experience while at NC State, W. Grant Johnston donated funds to help North Carolina students broaden their horizons and business knowledge through a study abroad experience. Poole College of Management will determine recipients based on strength of application essays. Preference will be given to in-state students from a rural area of North Carolina and those students who demonstrate financial need.

 

Other Scholarships (Location, skill-based, or miscellaneous) 
 
 PackAbroad sch icon#PackAbroad Social Media Scholars and Photojournalists Scholarship
Award amount- $1,000 to $1,500
Cycles Available- All
Criteria- Students must link to an Instagram portfolio demonstrating photographic proficiency
Requirements- Recipients must attend a mandatory training session and then regularly share their photography on social media while abroad
Summary- #PackAbroad award winners will be chosen based upon their portfolio strength. While abroad they will take photos regularly on behalf of the Study Abroad Office who will retain ownership of these photos after the student has returned.  Recipients must submit three tweets or Instagram posts per week and at least three posts prior to departure and upon return. Additionally, recipients must submit a portfolio of at least 25 high-resolution images upon return. Students selected will provide interesting and creative images reflecting NC State’s Think and Do initiative and our diverse student population abroad. This scholarship is not intended for students who wish to share a series of selfies or focus on travel highlights. Posts should cover a wide-variety of subjects concerning study abroad, academics, culture shock, engaging in the local culture. Students will need to provide their own camera to document their experience while abroad.
 
Africana Studies IconAfricana Studies and the Africa Project Scholarships
Award amount- $1,000 to $1,500
Cycles Available- Spring and summer
Criteria- Study abroad in Africa or an area related to the African diaspora (areas with a significant African descended population) or for programs where the subject matter of study is related to these issues
Requirements- Recipients must submit a written report on their experience no later than one month after their return to the United States.
Summary- The granting of Africana Studies scholarship awards is based on essay strength, academic qualifications, and the appropriateness and quality of planned study or project in the designated country.
 
IRC iconOn-Campus Resident Scholarship
Award amount- $500
Cycles Available- Spring
Criteria- Applicants must be currently living on campus (part of University Housing) and they must also live on campus for the fall semester following their trip abroad so that they have the opportunity to share their experiences with others in the on campus community.
Requirements- Recipient will be expected to give a brief (5-10 minute) presentation to the Inter-Residence Council upon return.
Summary- Eligible recipients will be chosen based upon essay strength.
 
Global Village IconGlobal Village
Award amount- $500
Cycles Available- Fall
Criteria- Applicants must currently reside in Global Village, have resided previously, or space permitting will reside the semester/year following their study abroad experience program abroad.
Requirements- Recipient must give a presentation to Alexander/Carroll residents when they return.
Summary- Eligible recipients will be chosen based upon essay strength.
 
Busko IconJoan Mills Busko Arts Travel Scholarship from Friends of the Gregg
Award amount- $1,000
Cycles Available- All
Criteria- Essay scores, 3.0 GPA, at least one year remaining at NCSU at completion of study abroad program, students taking art courses
Requirements- Discretion of the Friends of the Gregg scholarship committee
Summary- Preference will be given to students enrolling in an art or design course for a grade. Additional consideration will be given to applicants with limited travel abroad experience who are interested in the visual arts and are active in student or community organizations.
 
GTI icon2GTI Cultural Exchange Network Scholarship
Award amount- $1,000
Cycles Available- Spring and fall
Criteria- Applicants must have successfully completed the CENet for at least 2 semesters
Requirements- Students who accept this award are required to send several updates with photos during their study abroad experience by email. Students must also write a summary after the study abroad experience with photos. The updates and summary will be published on the GTI Newsroom blog and website. Students will also be required to collaborate with GTI staff to produce a short video about their experiences and help promote the CENet upon their return to NC State.
Summary- The Global Training Iniatitive (GTI) at NC State would like to encourage students who have successfully participated in the Cultural Exchange Network (CENet) to study abroad by awarding up to 2 scholarships of $1,000 each year. The CENet connects international and domestic students studying at NC State through joint participation in workshops, volunteer, cultural, and educational activities and events. The GTI encourages undergraduate and graduate students to apply.
 
Lake Atitlan Icon2Lake Atitlan- Ethnographic Field School Scholarship
