Meet Theodore Nguyen (He/Him)

Program and Location:

Spring, Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan

Major/Minor:

Electrical engineering major, and international studies and cognitive science minor

Why did you choose to study abroad?

I chose to study abroad as it offered an opportunity to explore a whole new culture and gain a deeper understanding of how to interact with people of different backgrounds. I wanted to learn more how the world operates beyond the US and see the impact I can make. Additionally, I wanted to connect with more people and take courses that are not normally offered at NCSU.

How did you pick your program?

I knew I really wanted to go to Japan as I wanted to see other Asian culture besides my own. I had friends who studied there before and really recommended it to me. Also, I really enjoyed what exposure I already had of Japan and wanted to see more of it.

What is something you learned about yourself? How are you different? How are you the same? Or, what did you realize about our own culture by living in another one?

I think I became much more outgoing and sociable. Going there made me feel like I needed to be so that I go talk to more people, do more activities, and learn more of the country. There are many differences in culture that were tough to adjust at first but really had help along the way from meeting others so that I can feel accustomed to them.

What advice would you give to another student?

I would recommend spending time to just explore. Go to new places, try new things and food, and meet different people. Some of the best moments is going out without a plan and see how the days go. There were so many places and experiences you would not think you would like until it just happens and much of what I liked was not stuff you can just find online.

How did you connect with locals and/or meet local friends?

I tried joining different clubs/circles to experience different groups of people. Outside of university, I simply adventured around and talked to people when I could in social areas. One of the biggest advice is just to try new things and meet people along the way who share these interests, which is how I met some of my friends there.

Would you do it again?

I would love to be able to do it again. There was no other experience quite like it and may not have had a chance like this again. While it does not seem doable to do again, I will forever be grateful for the time I did have
