Pre-Departure Conference

Spring 2021

All Spring 2021 students whose petitions to study abroad were approved were required to attend the COVID-19 Health and Safety virtual pre-departure orientation on December 1, 2020. Students and families/support systems who could not attend are strongly encouraged to view the recording linked below, as well as the required 6-minute overview of essential health and safety resources, which students were instructed to watch and explore prior to the virtual pre-departure orientation.

Additional pre-departure sessions

In lieu of the traditional in-person pre-departure conference, the Study Abroad Office has created a series of virtual sessions which students may engage with at their own pace. Session topics include: Mental health and cultural adjustment, LGBTQIA+ resources, identity and culture abroad, saving money and budgeting, and practical international travel tips and logistics.

*More information regarding the date/time/format of the pre-departure conference for Fall 2021 and Academic Year 2021-22 study abroad students will be shared in April 2021. In the meantime, students are welcome to explore the existing pre-departure resources on the Study Abroad Office website, as well as the sessions, topics, and resources from past conferences.

Students should direct any pre-departure questions to their regional coordinator or to study_abroad@ncsu.edu

Should I live with a host family while studying in Ecuador next semester? What’s the Italian student visa application process like? Who else is studying abroad in South Africa next spring? All these questions – and many more – are addressed at the Pre-Departure Conference for semester study abroad students.

At the Conference, student attendees choose from an array of 30-minute information sessions ranging from budgeting and financial preparations to GLBT issues abroad. In addition, students participate in region-specific meetings, in which their study abroad advisors share essential health and safety information, and returned study abroad students provide their perspective and expertise through an informal Q & A session. All semester study abroad students are required to attend their term’s Pre-Departure Conference.
