The Study Abroad Office works to create transformative and high-impact credit-bearing experiences abroad. NC State has seen significant study abroad growth in students served, programs offered, and scholarships awarded since our humble beginnings- see our 40th Anniversary Review. And there is still room for growth. NC State strives to increase study abroad access and participation, inclusive of all NC State students.

Number of NC State Students who studied abroad in 2023-24

The number of NC State students studying abroad since COVID has increased to more than 1,800 students in 2023-24, including study abroad and international research.
Additionally, the number of underrepresented students who participate in study abroad has also increased dramatically over the last ten years. The Study Abroad Office was honored with the 2019 Chancellor’s Creating Community Awards for our work increasing access to study abroad.

Number of NC State Group Programs

Students can choose from over 60 programs led by NC State faculty and staff. Students benefit from additional on-site support before and during the program. In 2018-19, Study Abroad offered over 60 STEM courses on our group programs to increase opportunities for STEM students to compliment historical programs for CHASS and Business students.

Funding Study Abroad

Study Abroad awarded more than $1,000,000 in 2023-24 and the average scholarship award increased to about $2,000 per student. Since 2011-12, Study Abroad has added more than 20 new awards from colleges and private donors, increasing access to study abroad. Our students are grateful for this support, but there is still unmet student need due to increased costs and student interest. With additional funding, more students will be able to benefit from this high-impact learning opportunity.
