International Health Insurance

All students participating in study abroad programs or other university-affiliated international travel are required to be enrolled in the UNC System-identified GeoBlue international health insurance policy for the duration of their program. In addition to medical benefits, the GeoBlue policy provides political unrest and natural disaster evacuation at a low cost of approximately $1.50/day. If health coverage is not included in the program costs, students will have the expense billed to their NC State Student Account.

Continuation of Domestic Insurance Coverage

The Study Abroad Office recommends that all students remain enrolled in domestic health insurance while studying abroad to avoid gaps in coverage. Semester students utilizing NC State’s BCBS of North Carolina policy must request enrollment from Student Blue to continue the policy. NC State and BCBS will not automatically enroll or re-enroll semester students who are studying abroad since the policy is not required while off-campus.

Some international students studying abroad in their home country are eligible to waive their enrollment in a GeoBlue policy, depending on the program type.
