Study Abroad Overview & Process

Studying abroad is more than simply traveling overseas. From the moment students being their study abroad application, they are actively participating in a purposeful learning process which begins at NC State and continues throughout their time abroad and beyond. The Study Abroad Office, as well as our numerous campus and international partners, are eager to assist your student through each step.

Consider asking your student

  • What types of courses or degree requirements does your academic advisor(s) recommend you fulfill abroad?
  • When are you planning to attend a Study Abroad 101 session? If your schedule will not permit you to attend an in-person session, did you know that you can watch the Study Abroad 101 video series online?
  • What is the application deadline for your program? Have you set aside time to work on completing your application well prior to the deadline?
  • Do you have a passport? Do you know when your passport expires? Please review passport requirements on the U.S. passports website.

These sample questions are great ways to support your student in exploring and understanding the study abroad application process. As families and support systems, feel free to explore the curated resources below to learn more about study abroad programs, processes, deadlines, and resources. If your student has a question regarding this information, encourage them to contact their study abroad advisor directly.
