NC State offers programs during the academic year, semester, spring break and summer terms. After reviewing the types of opportunities available, consider the different ways to find a program.

SEMESTER/YEAR-LONG PROGRAMS

Exchange and Direct-Enroll Programs

On exchange, a student from NC State and a student at a partner university trade places while still paying tuition directly to NC State. With direct enroll, a student enrolls temporarily at a partner university and pays the tuition of the international institution. Students take a wide range of classes with other international students.

NC State European Center in Prague

At NC State European Center in Prague, students earn NC State credits from a diverse selection of courses in the fall and spring semesters. Students take classes with other NC State students, taught by European faculty. The program cost is fixed and typically includes tuition, housing, and health insurance. Benefits include programs tailored for American students abroad with increased student support services.

Affiliate and Third Party Programs

There are countless additional programs available through affiliates and other third-party providers, both during the semester and summer. Affiliates tend to offer courses for students from U.S. institutions in various countries with a high level of on-site support. Though more expensive than an exchange program for in-state students, additional scholarships are typically available.

SUMMER, SPRING BREAK AND SHORT-TERM PROGRAMS

NC State Group Programs

Most short-term programs are led by an NC State faculty member and students go abroad with other NC State students. Programs typically are 3-5 weeks long. Group program benefits include unique programs tailored to the location and discipline of the faculty member. Programs may include site visits, research projects, and/or

NC State European Center in Prague

At NC State European Center in Prague, students earn NC State credits from a diverse selection of courses. Students take classes with other NC State students, taught by European faculty. The program cost is fixed and typically includes tuition, housing, and health insurance. Benefits include programs tailored for NC State students abroad with increased student support services. An internship opportunity is also available.

Partner Programs

Study at one of NC State’s strategic partner institutions this summer. These programs typically offer a wide variety of classes taught by the faculty of the host institution. Student participants tend to be mostly from the U.S. and other visiting international students. Programs may include excursions, social activities, and good onsite support.

Affiliate and Third Party Programs

There are countless additional programs available through affiliates and other third-party providers in the summer. Affiliates tend to offer courses for students from U.S. institutions in various countries with a high level of on-site support. They may also have internship and/or research opportunities. Though sometimes more expensive than an exchange program for in-state students, some additional scholarships are typically available from the affiliate.

Independent Study and Graduate Research

Independent study abroad is intended for students who have made special arrangements with a faculty member to earn academic credit for an independent project or research. Note: This application is not intended for any student traveling with an NC State-affiliated group, or any other organized study abroad programs.
