Meet Merida Mathis

Program and Location:

Chinese Language and Culture in Nanjing; Nanjing, China

Why did you choose to study abroad?

I wanted to further my understanding of Chinese culture and to further learn the language.

What did you learn about yourself?

I learned that I can be flexible and easy-going in tight situations and that I can keep a level head.

What was one of your favorite parts of your program?

One of my favorite parts of the program was being able to have free range in Nanjing so that we could immerse ourselves in the culture.

Were you surprised by anything during your time abroad?

I was surprised with how safe and at home I felt when staying in Nanjing. The people treated us with kindness and they understood that we may not be fluent in the language and they helped us anyway.

What advice do you have to future study abroad students?

Make sure you research where you are going before you get there and be prepared for anything.

Would you do it again?

Absolutely.

In what ways did your identity have an impact on your experience abroad?

It had no impact on my experience.

Is there any advice you would give to other students who share your identity?

Don’t let your identity hold you back from visiting a certain country.

Where did you find support to navigate any challenges you faced abroad?

I had no need to find any support.
