Why did you choose to study abroad?
I decided to study abroad not only because it is mandatory for my degree, but also because I love learn. I firmly believe that you cannot learn to the fullest extent without exploring things for yourself. I am curious to see what is out in the world beyond my current location. My goal is to be a never-ending student, constantly learning more each day from the people and spaces around me.
What did you learn about yourself?
By studying abroad, I learned how important it is to see the world through my own eyes. Specifically, in regards to Cuba, I learned that to properly understand and appreciate Cuba, it is crucial to come to see it for yourself. Consequently, I have developed a newfound passion and sense of protection for Cuba, the citizens, the economic crisis, the political stress, and more. I recognize the difference in daily life for Cubans compared to Americans. Therefore, I have also become more grateful to be an American, seeing firsthand the struggles in other countries.
What was one of your favorite parts of your program?
My favorite parts of the program were our guest lecturers and trips to Matanzas and Viñales. The guest lecturers were Cuban natives who were able to give us a different outlook on the topics that we were studying while also including pieces about their lives from firsthand experience. Our excursions to Matanzas and Viñales were a great way to explore other parts of Cuba while still learning about their environmental history and impact.
What advice do you have to future study abroad students?
If you are even thinking about it, do it! You will not know what you are missing until you go and see for yourself. I believe that learning through your own eyes has a more meaningful impact. If different cultures interest you and you enjoy traveling (or the thought of traveling), give it a try!
Were you surprised by anything during your time abroad?
I was surprised by how safe Old Havana is! Havana is an incredibly safe place. Through my own eyes, I saw children playing outside by themselves until 11pm/12am. Nonetheless, despite the immense safety, we were always warned to be circumspect and make smart decisions. I never felt a threat to my safety.
Would you do it again?
Absolutely! I am super grateful for the experience and if a TA position became available for this program, I would take it in a heartbeat.
