Why did you choose to study abroad?

I chose to study abroad to gain new perspectives and opportunities in game design by immersing myself in a different culture and educational system. This experience allowed me to collaborate with international peers, enhancing my creative skills and broadening my horizons. Living in a foreign country inspired my projects and helped me develop independence and cultural awareness, essential for my future career in game design.

What did you learn about yourself?

Studying abroad taught me that I am adaptable and capable of thriving in new and challenging environments. I discovered my ability to collaborate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, enhancing my creativity and problem-solving skills. Additionally, I realized the importance of cultural awareness and how it can inspire and enrich my work in game design.

What was one of your favorite parts of your program?

One of my favorite parts of my study abroad program was meeting and interacting with people from diverse backgrounds, both locals and international students. These interactions enriched my experience by exposing me to different perspectives and cultures. Building these connections broadened my worldview and created lasting friendships.

What advice do you have to future study abroad students?

Embrace the experience fully by being open to new cultures and perspectives, as this will enrich your personal and academic growth. Take advantage of every opportunity to connect with locals and other international students, as these relationships can provide support and lasting friendships. Lastly, step out of your comfort zone and explore the unfamiliar, as this is where the most profound learning and growth occur.

How did your study abroad experience prepare you for your future career?

My study abroad experience helped me learn more about my program focus in game design and introduced me to the coding side, which I was not very familiar with before. This exposure made me more comfortable with coding and less intimidated by it. Additionally, meeting people and networking during my time abroad helped me put myself out there more, which will be invaluable for my future career.

In what ways did your identity have an impact on your experience abroad?

As an Asian American, Vietnamese, and first-generation student, my identity had a meaningful impact on my study abroad experience in Melbourne. Being in a diverse city with a large Asian community made it easier to find a sense of belonging, which helped me feel more at home. As a first-gen student, studying abroad was especially meaningful since it was an opportunity my family hadn’t had. This added a sense of pride and motivation to fully embrace the experience, from academics to exploring Australian culture. Overall, my identity shaped my journey, helping me connect with others and learn more about myself.

Is there any advice you would give to other students who share your identity?

My advice to other students who share my identity would be to actively seek out community organizations or groups where you can connect with others who share similar backgrounds and experiences. Embrace opportunities to learn from the diverse cultural environment around you, as it can broaden your perspectives and enrich your personal growth. Finally, be proud of your identity and confidently navigate any challenges or cultural differences you encounter, as they can be valuable learning experiences that contribute to your overall journey abroad.

Where did you find support to navigate any challenges you faced abroad?

I found support in my new friends whom I met along the way, my flat mates who became like family, and the ongoing support of my family back home. Additionally, local community organizations and university resources provided valuable guidance and assistance whenever I faced challenges abroad.

Would you do it again?

I would 100% do it again and again! It was such an amazing experience that has changed my life forever. I met the coolest people, went on incredible adventures, and never regretted a single moment. I got to learn more about the culture and daily life in Australia, which broadened my perspective and enriched my understanding of the world. The friendships I made and the skills I gained are invaluable, and the memories of exploring new places and embracing different customs will always be cherished. This journey taught me resilience, adaptability, and the joy of discovering the unknown, making it an experience I would eagerly repeat.
