Why did you choose to study abroad?

I chose to study abroad because of the ability that it provides for you to see world cultures unlike your own and connect with the people of the world. My desire to go abroad came from me wanting to expand my perspectives and learn through others about their world views and experiences. For me, it was a no-brainer to complete during college because it allowed me to get out of the bubble I was in and expand my horizons in order to be exposed to the cultures and various populations of the world.

What did you learn about yourself?

I learned that I am capable of doing things that I doubted myself with in the past. I became more aware of my strong passion for helping others and making the people around me feel better about themselves. Through study abroad, I realized that I can transform myself for the better and can be aided with it by utilizing the help that others provide me.

What was one of your favorite parts of your program?

One of my favorite parts of my program was my experience in Kenya. I was fortunate enough to be able to go on a safari with a guide driver. He took me and others all throughout Kenya and drove us through the villages in between the national reserves where the animals are. A lot of little Kenyan children would run out where the ditch on their property met the road and wave with the biggest smiles on their faces. Their happiness made the experience so special.

What advice do you have to future study abroad students?

I advise future study abroad students to make the most of every second that they are abroad. Talk to people who are not like you and connect with them. Share meaningful experiences with those who do not have as much as you in life. Listen to the locals tell their stories. Always say thank you and empathize with those around you.

How did your study abroad experience prepare you for your future career?

My study abroad experience prepared me for my intended career of being a medical doctor by expanding my conversation skills and learning more about the health disparities that exist in the world. The moments I shared with locals helped me get a glimpse into their physical lives and understand where the health of the population stands. I became much more educated on the health impacts that take a toll on other parts of the world that may not be as big a concern where I live.

Would you do it again?

Absolutely
