Major/Minor:

Horticulture and Psychology

Why did you choose to study abroad?

I chose to study abroad because I wanted to learn more about plants in countries other than my own. I wanted to learn about the history and culture of the different regions in China.

What did you learn about yourself?

I learned that I enjoy learning about plants while spending time with them in their natural environment. I also learned that I enjoy meeting new people of different cultures and making new friends.

What was one of your favorite parts of your program?

My favorite part of the program was the various dinners we went to. During dinner I was able to try new cuisine with my Chinese classmates in a casual setting. Another favorite of mine was seeing giant Ginkgo and Golden Larch trees.

What advice do you have to future study abroad students?

I advise students to write all of their experiences down and take many pictures for friends and family who may not be able to have the wonderful experience of studying abroad.

How were your classes abroad different than if you would have taken them at NC State? Did you take any field trips or do anything outside of the traditional classroom?

Every single one of my classes were different abroad. We went on field experiences several times a week where we would hike up mountains and collect plants to press and preserve. We also went to museums and sites to learn about culture.

Would you do it again?

Yes, in a heartbeat. I learned more than I ever had in the short month I was in China.
