Why did you choose to study abroad?

Hearing stories about adventures, and events going on across the globe sparked my interest in traveling since my early childhood. Experiencing other cultures different from the ones of our childhood enables us to attain a heightened perspective of the world. I wanted this experience, as encountering people from other cultures could allow me to see the world as I have never seen it before. I chose to apply to Lund, Sweden, because it has so much to offer, not only towards my education but also helping me satisfy my curiosity. The town offers so much to see, such as the architecture from the elegant cathedrals that tower over the town, to the botanical gardens full of budding possibilities, to the museums that guard the most sacred of Lund’s history. With leading global companies stationed in Lund, opportunities can arise for the eager-minded, due to the fact that it is such a popular location with global high-tech powerhouse companies.

What did you learn about yourself?

Personally I learned that if I surround myself with great people, I will always be motivated to improve my mental and physical attributes. I can say that my interpersonal skills were built up. I was able to pass my nervous stage and have a normal conversation with a stranger who became a long lasting friend.

What was one of your favorite parts of your program?

My favorite part of the program was the educational system that was followed at the university. The semester was split into 2 terms allowing us students to be able to focus on at most two courses at once. The social life outside the classroom was very delightful, from the students to local folks. Everyone was so friendly and were willing to help no matter the situation.

What advice do you have to future study abroad students?

My advice would be to embrace the new challenge of visiting a new country. Don’t be afraid to interact with people, and take full advantage of participating in local traditions or festivities offer by the university. It is a great way to network with people.

How were your classes abroad different than if you would have taken them at NC State? Did you take any field trips or do anything outside of the traditional classroom?

My classes were different than NC State because the system for choosing one’s schedule was a group activity instead of individual meetings. For one of my history course, field trips were a weekly activity. They included visiting the town’s museum, and even visiting the country’s film town of Ystad.

Would you do it again?

I would definitely go back to Lund, but I would also be interested in visiting other parts of the globe.
