Why did you choose to study abroad?

I wanted to explore another country and live outside the U.S. for a while.

What did you learn about yourself?

I learned about my own independence. What limited me and where I was strong. In particular, I was comfortable walking around Oxford on my own and talking to people. While I also enjoyed taking classes at a leisurely pace. I also realized that I like to stay in one spot and get to know it before moving around a lot.

What was one of your favorite parts of your program?

I loved that I could attend productions of the plays and discuss them with my classmates. Everything felt so real and relevant when I could actually apply my knowledge.

What advice do you have to future study abroad students?

Challenge yourself to get outside of your comfort zone. Study abroad is a structured way to get out and explore someplace unfamiliar while still having people that support you.

How were your classes abroad different than if you would have taken them at NC State? Did you take any field trips or do anything outside of the traditional classroom?

Words through Time and Space was amazing because we went out and actually engaged with locals. We had to ask them about certain slang words and I got to meet some really friendly people while learning about the differences in their language at the same time. We also took a field trip to the Oxford printing museum which allowed us to see the change and spread of words over time.

Would you do it again?

Yes, absolutely.
