- All students studying abroad on an NC State Direct Enroll Program are required to be covered for the duration of their study abroad program. This is a mandatory UNC System requirement. SAO enrolls students in coverage based upon a standard set of coverage dates for the term they will be abroad. These dates will be listed in the invoice attached to the student’s online study abroad application.
- Students are expected to verify that these coverage dates will cover the duration of their program. If a student’s program is longer or shorter than the duration of the coverage period, he/she may request a date adjustment. Students should submit a request in writing to the SAO at least 2 weeks prior to the start of insurance coverage.
- Insurance cards will be uploaded to the student’s online study abroad application once they have been processed. The student will receive an email when they are available.
- See Insurance Rates
- The Study Abroad Office offers insurance coverage for dependents or coverage extension for up to 30 days beyond the dates of the program. For dependent or extension coverage please see Additional Insurance Coverage Policy.
The Study Abroad Office recommends that all students enroll in international health insurance while abroad AND remain enrolled in a domestic insurance policy that will cover them in the U.S., in case of an emergency while studying abroad that requires the student to return home for medical treatment.
Students in these programs will need to contact Melissa Dutton (email@example.com) in Student Health to request enrollment in the Student Blue insurance for the semester or year abroad. The cost per semester is $688. An additional Student Health Center fee of $138.51 can be added for use of the Health Center before and after the program. Students will not be automatically charged or enrolled.
