Credit hours are used to measure the amount of time spent in a class. At NC State, each credit hour represents approximately three hours of student work per week (usually one hour of in-class time and two hours of individual preparation and work). Therefore, a three-credit hour class represents nine hours of work, and a total class schedule of 12 credit hours represents about 36 hours of work per week. As an undergraduate, you must remain enrolled in at least 12 credit hours throughout the semester. Graduate students must maintain enrollment in at least 9 credit hours. Failure to do so will jeopardize your immigration status. Your home university may have additional credit hour requirements.
