FYI in Buenos Aires Program Overview

The FYI in Buenos Aires program is highly structured and led by faculty and one staff member from NC State University. The program utilizes the historical city by visiting numerous museums, national monuments, cultural landmarks, and other significant venues to engage students in their course work-providing first-hand experiences that inform critical and creative thinking.

While in Argentina, students also take a cultural excursion to Colonia de Sacramento, Uruguay.

Course Offerings

The following course is offered on the FYI in Buenos Aires Program. The courses carries NC State credit and is taught by NC State faculty.

COM 112: Interpersonal Communication (3 credits), taught by Dr. Elizabeth Nelson
GEP: Interdisciplinary Perspectives, Global Knowledge

This course focuses on the following topics; self-concept, language and culture, self-disclosure, active listening, verbal and nonverbal communication, and conflict management.


On-Campus Portion: Dates TBC

Abroad Portion: August 1 – 14, 2020

The program begins on NC State’s campus with a two-day orientation, during which time students participate in activities and discussions to develop community, clarify expectations, and introduce the approach to FYI courses. Students then board a group flight for Buenos Aires, Argentina, and spend 10 days in Buenos Aires, using the city and the Universidad de San Andres┬átheir classroom.

To conclude the program, students reconvene on campus a week or two after their return to North Carolina for a reflection and debrief. This final day provides the opportunity for students to unpack their experience, encouraging them to reflect on their growth as students, peers, and global citizens.


For the two-day orientation at NC State, students will be in double-occupancy rooms in a residence hall on-campus.

While in Buenos Aires, students will stay in double-occupancy rooms in shared apartments in a downtown neighborhood of Buenos Aires. Participants are able to walk to class and have easy access to public transportation as well.

Day 8: Depart for excursion to Colonia de Sacramento

Day 10: Argentine Estancia visit

Day 12: Class in morning; Tango lesson and show in evening
Day 13: Class in morning; Museum visit in afternoon
Day 14: Class in morning; visit to Casa Rosada in afternoon
Day 15: Class in morning; farewell lunch and return to NC State
