Spring 2020, COVID-19
Programs Suspended
On March 16, 2020, NC State suspended all study abroad programs and University-affiliated international activities for students. Students will not be able to remain abroad and should return to the U.S. or their country of permanent residence, as our first priority is the health and well-being of our students. We have communicated this information to all students studying abroad and those participating in University-affiliated international activities.
Student Returning to the U.S.
- As requested and prior to return, all students are asked to complete the COVID-19 Returning Study Abroad Student Details form.
- To help ensure the ongoing health and safety of the community, NC State expects students to follow the revised CDC guidance instructing travelers to stay home for a period of 14 days from departure of a CDC Level 3 country. Student Health Services is available to answer any questions you have (healthypack@ncsu.edu).
Refund Policy
Program costs are directly tied to credit earned. We are making every effort to coordinate academic accommodations that will allow students to complete their semester online and all courses transcripted will receive credits as previously approved. If students are unable to earn credit for the spring term, the University will make every effort to refund students to the extent possible based on the matrix below. If your situation does not fit within the matrix below, please contact your study abroad program coordinator and copy your academic advisor to review your unique academic status so that we might best assist you.

¹ Tuition: Dependent on individual students’ situation
² Housing: For most students, housing is paid to an outside vendor (not NC State). NC State is not able to provide refunds for individual expenses paid to an outside vendor. In these cases, students should contact the landlord or host institution regarding the termination of the lease or refund. If, however, housing is paid to NC State (LdM), any recoverable expenses from the vendor will be passed along to students.
Additional Expenses and Information
NC State is not able to provide refunds for individual, personal expenses. Students should work with airlines to obtain future credit for any canceled or future flights.
If your enrollment has changed, your aid eligibility will change. Please contact the Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid so that they can review your individual status.
If you maintain enrollment in your study abroad affiliated courses, and earn transfer credit as planned, you will maintain your scholarship. If you have not studied abroad because your program was suspended prior to departure and you withdraw from the University, your scholarship may be revoked.
If you have encountered financial difficulties, students are eligible to apply for assistance through Pack Essentials.
