- Working with academic departments to establish study abroad course(s).
- Collaborating with the SAO to develop a self-supporting budget with a program cost to students that is as low as possible.
- Determining, in consultation with the SAO, whether the program will need program assistants.
- Arranging for housing, meals, classroom space, excursions, on-site transportation, etc., and complying with NC State policies on purchases and contracts. Please note that the director need not make all arrangements personally. The SAO encourages use of on-site agencies, partner universities, and other support services if they are not cost prohibitive.
- Marketing the program and recruiting students. This is a very important responsibility that rests primarily with the Faculty Director.
- Providing prospective students with accurate and complete information on the nature and scope of the program.
- Using the SAO’s application procedure, which complies with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and other higher education regulations.
- Reviewing and accepting applicants online. Assistance is available from the SAO if faculty directors have applicants with disabilities or conduct records. (See the PackAbroad Reviewers’ Guide for step-by-step instructions on how to use the application system.)
- Providing students with program-specific orientation materials.
- Registering students with overseas embassy/consulate via the U.S. Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).
- Preparing a comprehensive safety assessment, including risk management and crisis response plan.
- Locating doctor/hospital and mental health provider in host country that complies with GeoBlue insurance.
- Monitoring and notifying students of any risks associated with host country.
- Locating and arranging accommodations for students with disabilities.
