Leila joined the Study Abroad Office in July 2014 as the new Regional Advisor for Asia, Middle East, North Africa, Australia, and Pacific Islands. In addition to advising students, Leila will coordinate all faculty-led programs from CALS and Sciences, and manage social media and special events for the office.
In 2008, Leila completed her Master of Arts in Political Science with a concentration in International Relations and a Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies from Appalachian State University. Leila has traveled to many countries in Europe and also traveled to Tunisia, Egypt, UAE, and Iran. While Leila was in graduate school, she went on the first study abroad faculty led trip from ASU to South Africa, spending time in different cities and learning about Apartheid and the Post-Apartheid period. After graduate school,Leila spent time in NYC working with a non-profit film company as a researcher and transcriber, then worked with refugees in Nashville, TN, and later she worked as an International Student Advisor at Kent State University for two years. Most recently she was the ESL Advisor at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College.
As a child Leila spent two years in Rome, Italy and as a teenager she lived in Brussels, Belgium for five years. Leila’s parents are originally from Iran and she speaks and understands Farsi and a little French. Having lived abroad and having parents from another country has had a profound impact on Leila. Since then, she has always craved to be in an international environment and she is always striving to better understand the world around her. She is very passionate about traveling to new places, meeting new people, and exploring new ideas and cultures.
