Meet Peter Chege

Program and Location:

Fall, ESB Business School at Reutlingen University; Reutlingen Germany

Major/Minor:

Accounting & International Studies

Why did you choose to study abroad?

I wanted to supplement my International Studies major as well as push myself out of my comfort zone.

What did you learn about yourself?

How to be independent and the value I place in being a globally aware college student and how I would like to bring that into my future career.

What was one of your favorite parts of your program?

Field trips for my International Business with case study in Automotive Industry class.

What advice do you have to future study abroad students?

Learn to be flexible and be vigilant with your budgeting.

How were your classes abroad different than if you would have taken them at NC State? Did you take any field trips or do anything outside of the traditional classroom?

Having three hour lectures once a week, the professors were able to constantly bring in guest lecturers in the respective fields. I took field trips to power plants for my International Business with case studies in automotive industry.

In what ways did your identity have an impact on your experience abroad?

I was able to better understand my identity as a queer and black man. Since I was not around my regular community, I had to introspectively examine my own standing within my in groups.

Is there any advice you would give to other students who share your identity?

Do extensive research before hand.

Where did you find support to navigate any challenges you faced abroad?

People studying abroad in my in-group.

Would you do it again?

Yes
