Program: Science
in China
is developing
rapidly.The
massive investments in education and research infrastructure ensure
that China will be a major player in the scientific world in the near
future.
This program will provide you with an opportunity to experience and
learn about
Chinese science and the perspective of
Chinese
people in
an unique setting.You will study in the same classroom side-by-side with
Chinese students
and conduct research by interacting directly with Chinese graduate
students and
professors.You
will have the
opportunity to learn both culture and language as an integral part of
this program
by direct interaction with the new friends you will make.This program will
prepare you
for
the future while
you acquire
credit towards
your NCSU degree.
Courses: Students will have the option of choosing two of the following course options.
Physical Chemistry CH431/CH433/CH437/CH331(3
or 4
credits) taught by
Prof. Stefan
Franzen and Li Haoran The
course will be have a main lecture series complemented
with breakout sessions to permit students in Biochemistry, Chemistry or
Engineering to obtain credit for CH331, CH 431, CH433 or CH437, respectively.
Research CH499/BCH492 or
equivalent in various departments, Research (3
credits) taught by Prof. Stefan
Franzen, Li Haoran, Wang Qi and others A research
project in computational
chemistry will permit you to work with Chinese graduate students in a
project
that will train you in current methods while you learn how research is
conducted
in China. The Program Director has close
ties with a number of Zhejiang University professors.Professor
Wang
Qi
of the Chemistry
Department will
sponsor research activities in the area of
ligand-receptor interactions and peroxidase catalysis.Professor Li Haoran will sponsor research in
oxidation catalysis.
Language/Humanities FL 395 Intensive Chinese Language, PS 231 Introduction to International Relations, or HI 264 Modern Asia (3 credits) taught by Zhejiang University or faculty from the NCSU Hangzhou International Relations and History program
Students can earn six or seven
hours of NCSU degree credit while visiting and studying in China's most
beautiful city at one of its preeminent universities.You will experience an immersion in Chinese
campus and daily life through special cultural activities, planned
excursions
(including Beijing, Shanghai,
the Yellow
Mountain
and several one day weekend trips) while working on a
computational project that will give you a skill you
can use in coursework and research, as well as in your future career.
Location:
The
city of Hangzhou with a population of about 7 million is the capital of
Zhejiang
province. It is located about 1 ½ hours south of Shanghai on
the East
coast of China.It
serves as a
political, economic and cultural center and is known for its scenic
beauty that
draws many Chinese tourists. Program residence will be in the
International
College of Zhejiang University located on the Yuquan campus just west
of the
city center. The mission of the College is the teaching of
Chinese
language and culture. It
hosts a variety
of international short programs in the summer. Zhejiang
University was
founded in 1897 and is considered one of the three most outstanding
universities in China. Located near the Yuquan campus is West
Lake, one of
Hangzhou's most renowned scenic features. The lake covers two
square miles
and is surrounded by parks, pavilions and cultural sites.
Calendar
of Activity: Following
arrival in China, the program will spend several nights in Beijing before arriving in Hangzhou for the start of classes and an orientation to
Zhejiang University and the city.Subsequently
classes will begin and meet daily for
the next six weeks.In
addition there will be a weekend trip to the famous Yellow Mountain
and the ancient Anhui village of Hongcun.There
will also be several cultural lectures, social events, and class
excursions as
time permits and schedules can be arranged.All scheduled program tours and excursions are covered by
the program
fee.
Accommodations: Program
participants will be housed in air
conditioned private rooms with private bath in the International
College
facility on the Yuquan campus. In addition to housing the
College
includes its own class rooms, dining facility and laundry.There are
additional student cafeterias
across the campus as well as a very convenient student supply store and
service
area. Meals
are the participant personal
responsibility. Food
in China is
relatively inexpensive, especially on the campus. However, you should expect
to budget about
$400 for meals for the entire program to cover eating occasionally off
campus.
The
University reserves the right to alter the program format and/or costs
in case of conditions beyond its control. If the program is canceled or a
student withdraws, a refund of program costs may not be available in
