One of the most fascinating cities in the world,
Istanbul covers two continents, several major civilizations, and at least three
thousand years of history. Visitors can see an expanse of history and culture
simply not available in any one city anywhere else in the world. Famous sites
include the Topkapi Palace, residence of the sultans from the 15th century to
the early 1800s, the Aya Sofya, built by Justinian in 548 when it was the
greatest church in Christendom, and the Blue Mosque, a triumph of harmony, proportion
and elegance.
The University
Since its founding in the 19th century, Bogazici
University has enjoyed an excellent reputation as one of the top institutions
of higher education in the Middle East. Initially opening its doors to students
in 1863 as Robert College, it was the first American university founded outside
of the United States. In 1972, Robert College was incorporated into the Turkish
educational system and Bogazici University was formally established.
Bogazici offers an excellent opportunity for students
of many academic disciplines to study abroad at a comprehensive university. It
is a good choice for students looking for an independent study abroad experience
in a vibrant city. The number of international students studying at Bogazici is
relatively small. Situated on a hill overlooking the Bosphorous Strait, the
campus affords stunning views of the strait and of Istanbul.
Academics
Bogazici
University is a comprehensive university comprising four faculties: Arts and
Sciences, Engineering, Economics and Administrative Sciences, and Education as
well as six institutes, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Applied
Disciplines and the School of Advanced Vocational Studies. Students on this
program are free to choose from any of the courses taught at any of these
academic units.
All courses are taught in English. Students may opt to take a Turkish language course, and are encouraged to do so.
Though
exchange students choose one department as their 'home,' they can take courses
from as many different faculties/schools as they would like. Many faculty
members teach in more than one faculty and the faculty structure is designed to
accommodate students wishing to explore their studies on an interdisciplinary
level.
There
is no pre-registration procedure for exchange students. Students may register
for classes upon arrival at Bogazici University. The Office of International
Programs will guide students to the appropriate academic advisors, who can help
them to select the courses which are relevant to their study program.
Accommodations and Student Life The Office of International Programs is responsible for all exchange
students on campus. They will provide a series of orientations for all
international students, and will be your contact for any questions
relating to visa matters and government regulations.
The Bogazici
campus feels like a typical American or British university campus with
many architecturally harmonious buildings surrounding lovely green
quads. Most of Bogazici University's buildings are located on its South
Campus and this is where exchange students will take the majority
of their classes. Wheras South Campus contains the oldest buildings of
the university, the North Campus and the Hisar Campus contain the newer
additions to the University facilities. A fourth campus, on the Asiatic
side of the Bosphorus, houses the historic Kandilli Observatory, a
research unit of the University. The fifth campus, the Kilyos (or
Saritepe) Campus, situated on the shores of the Black Sea 20 km to the
northwest of the South and North campuses.
The newest addition to BU's residences is the recently completed Superdorm,
a thoroughly modern residence hall located about an 10 minute walk from
the North Campus and 15 minute walk from the South Campus. All exchange
students attending Bogazici University are assisted in securing housing
in the Superdorm. Each student in the Superdorm has an individual
bedroom and shares a living room, kitchenette, and bathroom with one to
four other students. Rooms are cleaned daily by Superdorm staff, and
basic furniture (including a small fridge, bed, desk etc.) is provided.
Students also have the option of living off campus. This can be a more affordable option than the Superdorm, but requires more work on the part of the student to arrange themselves. Information about how to search for off-campus accommodation can be found here.
Students on this program are also encouraged to become members of the many Student Clubs on campus. There is also an active athletic community on campus, with several sports teams organized by the Sports Committee.
The
University reserves the right to alter the program format and/or costs
in case of conditions beyond its control. If the program is canceled or
a student withdraws, a refund of program costs may not be available in
all cases. Please refer to the Study Abroad Office Refund Policy for
details. Contact us: study_abroad@ncsu.edu
