The University of Cape Town was founded in 1829 as South African College and is a vibrant academic community of 18,000 students and 4,500 members of staff. UCT's outstanding record in teaching and research is responsible for attracting talented students from all over the world. Currently UCT is host to over 3,000 international students from over 92 different countries.
During the period of apartheid, UCT was designated as a "whites only" institution. However, today's campus has been transformed to reflect the diversity of the entire South African population. The mission of UCT is to recognize its location in Africa and its historical context, to claim its place in the international community of scholars, and to strive to transcend the legacy of apartheid in South Africa to overcome all forms of gender and other oppressive discrimination.
The main campus occupies one of the most beautiful spots on the Cape peninsula, on the slopes of Table Mountain. This vantage point offers gorgeous panoramic views and easy access to the beaches, mountains, and city center of Cape Town. As one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, Cape Town is a historic, cosmopolitan city with a vibrant multicultural atmosphere and a host of arts, sports and leisure activities.
Academics
Semester study abroad students at UCT have a wealth of course options. Click here for handbooks from UCT's faculties (colleges), which include course descriptions.
UCT has the following scheme for courses. Courses that end in:
F = first semester (spring)
S = second semester (fall)
W = whole year
H = half load course over whole year
Z = consult UCT Study Abroad Office for details
Study abroad students at UCT are permitted to enroll in up to four courses per term. UCT uses the NQF credit system. A typical course is worth 18, 24, or 36 NQF's. One NQF = 0.222 U.S. semester credits. The usual course load for study abroad students is 72 NQF's, which equals approximately 16 U.S. credits.
Experiential Learning
Students are encouraged to engage in community service through SHAWCO, the Student's Health and Welfare Centres Organisation. SHAWCO is a student-run NGO that strives to improve the quality of life for individuals in developing communities within the Cape Metropolitan area. SHAWCO has over 1200 volunteers running over 15 health and education projects in 5 centers throughout the area.
Accommodations
Program participants are housed with other international students in shared houses or apartments close to campus. Students will receive detailed accommodation options from UCT upon program acceptance. Click here for further international student accommodation details.
Note:
This is a non-exchange direct enroll program, which means that students
will pay UCT tuition and fees for the semester abroad, rather than NCSU
tuition and fees. See Budget Sheet link for program costs.
The University reserves the right to alter the program format and/or costs in case of conditions beyond its control.
