The Location

Finland, the land of the midnight sun, is also a land of unspoiled countryside which offers many outdoor activities, including skiing and skating in the winter and hiking and boating in the summer, as well as the cultural and social activities of its university towns. Through the UNC-EP exchange, NC State students may study in English at the central Finnish universities of Oulu, Jyväskylä, Vaasa, Tampere, and Kuopio.

The University

A coastal city only about 100 miles south of the Arctic Circle, Oulu is the cultural and technological capital of northern Finland. The university has about 13,000 students and is located on a beautiful modern campus about 10 minutes from downtown. Programs taught in English include Scandinavian studies, Japanese language and studies, Women's studies, architecture and Nordic design, education, environmental studies, and mechanical engineering.

Accommodations

Housing for the international students is provided in the apartments of the Student Housing Foundation at each university. Each student will have a private room of his/her own and share a kitchen and bathroom with 1 - 6 other students; the residences also have shared facilities such as laundry rooms and saunas. Finnish students generally prepare their own meals but each university also has inexpensive student cafeterias.

The University reserves the right to alter the program format and/or costs in case of conditions beyond its control. If the program is canceled or a student withdraws, a refund of program costs may not be available in all cases. Please refer to the Study Abroad Office Refund Policy for details.
