Leeds, the third largest city in the United Kingdom, is situated on the banks of the River Aire in northern England, within easy reach of the natural beauties of the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors, and the Pennines. Leeds is the historic hub for the country's manufacturing industry and textile trade as well as the cultural, sporting and shopping center for much of the Airedale region. The central location of the city in West Yorkshire provides easy access to the rest of Great Britain; London is only 2 ½ hours away and Edinburgh 3 hours by train. Leeds is noted for its extensive parks and open spaces. The city center is a mix of modern and traditional architecture with contemporary commercial and shopping precincts standing next to Victorian and Tudor buildings.
The University
About 28,000 students attend Leeds, making it one of the largest universities in the United Kingdom. The University of Leeds is also one of the oldest institutions in England, having its origins in the Yorkshire College of Science and Leeds Medical School of 1874. The active Leeds University Student Union oversees more than 50 sport clubs and over 150 social, cultural, departmental and international organizations which exchange students are welcome to join. Possible fields of study range from arts and social sciences to the physical sciences, textiles and engineering.
Accommodations
Accommodations on campus include student apartment buildings with shared kitchen facilities or residence halls with meal plans. Students also have the option to live off-campus in private or University-owned student lodging.
Courses
Leeds is a large, comprehensive university which offers a wealth of academic courses. Students should begin by reading the Leeds guide to researching "modules" (courses). Be sure to note the "School-Specific Guidance," as not all subject areas are available to exchange students. Access the Leeds Module Catalogue to find course descriptions and be sure to check the "incoming study abroad" box to filter by courses available to visiting students. A full-time semester course load at Leeds is 30 credits. Please also refer to the credit equivalency guidelines for NC State and Leeds.
The University reserves the right to alter the program format and/or costs in case of conditions beyond its control. If the program is canceled or a student withdraws, a refund of program costs may not be available in all cases. Please refer to the Study Abroad Office Refund Policy for details.
