FlorenceLive the Italian life in a city rich in art and history!
Earn up to six academic credits!

Sponsored by The University Scholars Program

Location & Program

Nestled in the fabled landscape of Tuscany, where art, architecture, food and history blend easily together in a romantic and sun-drenched city, Florence is a must for the adventurous student. Stroll along the banks of the Arno River, make your way through the shops nestled along the famed Ponte Vecchio bridge (built in 1345!), visit the world-famous jewelry, clothing and leather shops, spend a leisurely afternoon in the Boboli Gardens, drop in for a coffee or a snack at your favorite street-side cafe or enjoy incredible multi-course Italian meals, and, of course, absorb the abundance of artistic wealth found throughout the city's museums, palazzi, and churches as you walk the streets once wandered by Michelangelo, Boccaccio, Galileo, and the Medici.

The Florence Program is sponsored by the University Scholars Program and is carried out in cooperation with the Lorenzo de' Medici Institute (LDM). Located in the heart of historic Florence, the main LDM building dates back to the 13th century. The teaching facilities are completely modernized, though, and include excellent classrooms, studio facilities, and a library with full computer access.

For program cost information, see the above Summer Budget Sheet. Early application is advisable for all NC State Summer Programs.

Courses

All courses are taught in English by the LDM faculty in the LDM facilities. Students may earn up to 6 credit hours. All students must register for a common course (HI 395). The course is offered exclusively to NC State students. It carries 3 credit hours and must be taken for a letter grade.

HI 395 Italian Renaissance Civilization and Culture
All participants will register for this course designed to provide an understanding of the history, philosophy, politics, artistic movements, and civic life of the Italian Renaissance by discussing the most important people and achievements of this period. Several local visits to churches and museums will supplement this course.  This course must be taken for a letter grade.

Additional course offerings:
Students may take a second course (but are not required to do so) at no additional cost. This course may be a three credit course or a non-credit special interest course. Courses taken for credit must be taken for a letter grade. In addition to HI 395, several other LDM courses, along with Italian language, have been pre-approved for NC State. These courses are indicated with asterisks (***). Students may petition their departments to receive NC State credit for other academic and studio art courses. Students will be provided with a complete list of these courses prior to departure. The following is a partial list of credit courses typically available during the summer (a final list of summer courses should be available by January 2010):

Accommodations

Students will be housed in fully furnished, double apartments located in downtown historic Florence and easily accessible to classes at LDM.

Students will eat meals on their own. Each apartment has a complete kitchen. Grocery stores and many local restaurants are close at hand.

Excursions & Events

The program includes three academic excursions. The first is an all day field trip to Siena. The second is a three day visit to Venice, including visits to St. Mark's Basilica, Church of the Frari and a walking tour of the city. It also includes a ferry ride to Murano, the famous island of glassblowers and more. The third is a three day visit to southern Italy, including a visit to the archeological ruins at Pompeii, a day on the Isle of Capri, and a climb up Mount Vesuvius.

Financial Aid

Financial aid is generally available to help qualified NC State students meet the expenses of NC State study abroad programs. Students from other institutions should contact their home institution study abroad and financial aid offices for information. For additional funding, NC State students should consider applying for a study abroad scholarship from the Study Abroad Office.
