1. Study Abroad Programs:
All students studying abroad through an NC State Study Abroad Program are required to be covered for the
duration of their program plus one (1) contingency day before and after their program. This will be billed for
all students at a rate of $1.00 per day of coverage. Please note: The Study Abroad Office no longer
handles insurance extensions beyond the dates of your program. For coverage beyond the contingency
day before and after the program, please see Travel Insurance below.
Summer, Faculty-led, and Group programs: Coverage dates will be based upon the program dates listed for your program on
the Study Abroad website. If you pay your program balance to the Study Abroad Office, the cost for your insurance
coverage will be included in your program cost. If you pay your program balance to your Faculty Director, the cost for your insurance
should be paid directly to your Faculty Director.
Semester exchange programs: Coverage dates will be based upon information in the student's acceptance letter
from their host institution. If dates are not available at the time of invoicing, coverage dates will be based upon
past participants who studied abroad at the same location. All students will be asked to verify their coverage dates
upon receipt of their invoice.
ISEP Participants: You will be billed for insurance directly by ISEP. Therefore waived from the UNC
required health insurance plan.
All Faculty Directors leading an NC State Study Abroad Program will be covered for the duration of their
program plus one (1) contingency day before and after their program. Faculty Directors are also eligible to
receive up to six (6) additional days of coverage, to be used in any combination before or after their program. For
coverage beyond the six additional days of coverage, please see Travel Insurance below.
Faculty Directors are eligible to purchase insurance for Eligible Dependents during the program dates that
Faculty are covered. As defined by HTH, an Eligible Dependent may be the Faculty Director's lawful spouse and/or
his/her unmarried children under age 19. Coverage for Eligible Dependents will be billed to the Faculty Director at a
rate of $2.22 per day of coverage for spousal coverage, and $2.22 per day to cover all eligible children (the coverage for children is a set amount and does not depend upon the number of children you are covering. For example, it costs the same to cover 5 children as it does for 1 child). Please note: Coverage for Eligible Dependents
is not covered by a program budget.
Domestic Partner Insurance: Domestic Partners of Faculty Directors are not eligible for coverage under the
Study Abroad plan. For insurance coverage for a Domestic Partner during a Study Abroad Program, please see
Travel Insurance below.
2. Non-Credit International Programs:
Non-credit international programs involving international travel are not required to purchase but are
eligible for insurance coverage through our office provided that the program is sponsored by a department or
unit at NC State University, and the majority of program participants must be students enrolled at NC State University.
Please note: It is the responsibility of the program organizer to contact the Study
Abroad Office about insurance coverage. It is not the responsibility of the Study Abroad Office to
contact potential groups who are going abroad about insurance coverage.
Coverage dates will be based upon information provided by the program organizer and must include one (1)
contingency day before and after the scheduled start and end dates of the program. The coverage length is the same for
Faculty, Staff, and Students. For coverage beyond the contingency day before and after the program, please see Travel Insurance below.
Student coverage will be billed at a rate of $1.00 per day of coverage.
Faculty and Staff coverage will be billed at a rate of $2.22 per day coverage.
Faculty and Staff leading non-study abroad programs involving international travel are only eligible to purchase
insurance coverage for themselves through the Study Abroad Office. To learn how to purchase insurance coverage for a
Domestic Partner or Child, please see Travel Insurance below.
3. International Internships and non-NC State programs:
NC State students participating on international internships and non-NC State study abroad programs
are not required to purchase but are
eligible for insurance coverage through our office.
Please note: It is the responsibility of the student to contact the Study Abroad
Office requesting insurance coverage. It is not the responsibility of the Study Abroad Office to contact
potential students who are participating on international internships about insurance coverage.
Coverage dates will be based upon information provided by the organization/office hosting the student and
must include one (1) contingency day before and after the scheduled start and end dates of the internship. For
coverage beyond the contingency day before and after the program, please see Travel Insurance below.
Student coverage will be billed at a rate of $1.00 per day of coverage.
4. Faculty Traveling Internationally:
Faculty who are going abroad and are not leading a program are not eligible to purchase travel insurance through the Study Abroad Office. These faculty should review Travel Insurance below for our recommendation for travel insurance.

Travel Insurance: For any person who is not eligible to purchase insurance through the Study Abroad Office or would like to purchase additional coverage beyond your program dates, we recommend travel insurance provided by HTH Worldwide. HTH's Travel Gap Excursion insurance provides coverage at a very reasonable price that is easy to purchase and is comparable to the insurance provided by the Study Abroad Office.
