Each year, the Study Abroad office at NC State provides financial assistance for overseas study in the form of study abroad scholarships. These funds are donated by Colleges and Departments across campus as well as from the Study Abroad Office. For students with a tight budget, a scholarship can help bridge the financial gap and make an international experience possible. A complete list of recipient names is listed on our webpage.
During the 2008-2009 application cycle, the Study Abroad Office administered $171,500 in funds and awarded 204 awards to students for use between Fall 2008 and Fall 2009. Thanks to a generous grant, during the 2008-09 Academic Year we were able to award an additional $20,000 in Study Abroad scholarships from the 2007-08 Academic Year. Students have the flexibility to apply for an award even if they have not applied for a program, allowing them to determine if scholarship support is available in advance. This year, approximately 30% of students who applied (145 students out of 489 who applied) were awarded scholarships. Of the 145 students who received a scholarship, almost 100 recipients (~70%) had an expected family contribution of under $10,000 - NC State estimates undergraduate expenses for the 2009-10 academic year to be $16,767. Clearly there is a high level of financial need among study abroad participants, and these scholarships play an important role in helping students participate in these life-changing experiences.
This process could not take place without the generous involvement of the scholarship committee readers. Faculty and staff across campus volunteer to review applications for the Study Abroad Award, while others on serve one of 13 other committees, carefully reading and scoring the applications so they may be later ranked. This year, around 490 student applications were reviewed.
The applications for the Spring 2010 Study Abroad Scholarships will be available to submit online in December and are due on 12 February 2010. Each year the scholarships become more competitive as we have more and more students applying to study abroad. We encourage all study abroad participants to apply for this scholarship opportunity.
Deadline:
There are two deadlines for scholarship applications, one in the fall and one in the spring. Scholarships applied for during the fall semester may be used to study during the current academic year, current fall, following spring, and following summer. Scholarships applied for during the spring semester may be used to study during the current academic year, current spring, following summer, and following fall. You may apply for any scholarships in both the fall and spring application cycles; however, you cannot be awarded the same scholarship in the fall and the spring for the same program.
Likewise, if you apply for a scholarship in Fall 2009, you may use that award to study in:
Fall 2009*
Winter 2009
Spring 2010
Summer 2010 or
Academic Year 2009 - 10.
If you apply for a scholarship in Spring 2010, you may use that award to study in:
Winter 2009*
Spring 2010*
Summer 2010
Academic Year 2009 - 10 or
Fall 2010.
*This will be a retroactive award and students will receive the funds while they are abroad or after their program is completed.
You may apply for scholarships even if you have not yet been accepted to a program.
Eligibility:
Full-time and part-time degree-seeking NC State students, both undergraduate and graduate, participating on credit-bearing programs are eligible to apply. Undergraduate students must have completed at least one semester of college credit before applying for a Study Abroad Scholarship. Transfer students and graduate students may apply during their first semester here at NC State, but they must turn in an official transcript from their previous institution. You may apply for scholarships even if you have not yet applied for your Study Abroad program. Certain scholarships have additional eligibility requirements, and those requirements can be viewed on the Scholarship Program Brochure Page.
