You can apply for a Study Abroad scholarship by visiting the scholarship program page and clicking on the box to "Apply Now" in the upper-right corner of the page.
I have not yet applied for a Study Abroad program, can I still apply for scholarships?
Yes, if you're thinking about studying abroad, you should apply for scholarships. You should research the program that interests you most, and write your application based on the program you are most likely to attend. Many of the Study Abroad Scholarships will apply even if you change your program. If you plan on applying for the Africana Studies Scholarship or a college-specific scholarship, those scholarships are only awarded if you attend those programs.
I am a Non-NC State student and plan to attend a Study Abroad program sponsored by NC State University, am I eligible to apply for scholarships?
No, only degree-seeking NC State students are eligible for the scholarship program.
Can part-time NC State students apply for scholarships?
Yes, if they are enrolled in a degree program at NC State University.
Can graduate students apply for scholarships?
Yes, this scholarship program is open to graduate and undergraduate students enrolled at NC State University.
I'm going on a non-NC State program, am I still eligible for scholarships?
Yes, students on non-NC State credit-bearing programs are eligible for scholarships. You must submit an acceptance letter and non-NC State Enrollment Packet to the Study Abroad Office by the appropriate deadline.
I'm going on a 1-week program overseas as a component of a semester-long course, am I eligible for scholarships?
If the overseas program is a required component of the course, you are eligible for scholarships. If the overseas program is not a required component of the course, you are not eligible for scholarships. If you apply for scholarships, you will be required to submit proof that the overseas program is a required component of the course (ie. the course syllabus stating the requirement.)
I was awarded a scholarship to study abroad this summer but will be unable to go and therefore will not use the award this summer. Can I apply my scholarship to a future program?
Scholarship funds are awarded for a particular term (such as summer 2009) and cannot be applied towards a future term outside of the scholarship cycle. They may be applied to a different program, however, within the same scholarship cycle. Please see the Scholarship General Info page for scholarship cycles.
What happens to the scholarship fund if I am unable to use them?
At the end of every given specific scholarship cycle all unused awards are returned to the scholarship fund, rolled over the next scholarship cycle, and are awarded to other students for future terms.
I'd like to Study Abroad, but haven't decided on a program. Should I still apply for scholarships?
Yes, if you're thinking about studying abroad, you should apply for scholarships. You should research the program that interests you most, and write your application based on the program you are most likely to attend. Many of the Study Abroad Scholarships will apply even if you change your program. If you plan on applying for the USP - Florence Scholarship, the Africana Studies Scholarship, or any other program-specific scholarship, those scholarships are only awarded if you attend those programs.
If I do not yet have my reference form, can I submit my completed application materials now and submit the reference form later?
No, you must submit ALL scholarship materials together in order to be eligible for the Study Abroad Office scholarships. The Study Abroad Office is not responsible for matching incomplete application materials. If you submit an application without a reference, we will not be able to verify whether a reference letter was matched to your application.
Can you give me any additional advice to help with my scholarship application?
You should review the Enrollment Requirements carefully, and follow all instructions on the application materials.
Review the scholarship descriptions, and do not apply for scholarships for which you are not eligible. Applying for scholarships that you are eligible for will disqualify you from any awards.
Print a copy of the application materials for your records.
You must submit your reference online as a part of your scholarship application. The Study Abroad Office will not accept paper copies of your reference
When will results of the scholarship competition be available?
All scholarship applicants will receive an email near the end of the semester in which they applied telling them whether they did or did not receive a scholarship award. Results will be available via the Study Abroad Office website at the same time.
Will I be notified even if I am not awarded a scholarship?
Yes, all scholarship applicants will receive an email prior to the decision date telling them whether they did or did not receive a scholarship award.
Your scholarship award will be deducted from your program balance.
NC State Semester or Year Program
A check will be issued to you after you have been accepted into your program and submitted your acceptance letter to the Study Abroad Office. For information about the payment schedule, you should contact the Scholarship Administrator. It is your responsibility to follow up with the Scholarship Administrator regarding receipt of your acceptance letter. Please note that the check will be sent to your permanent address on file with the University or direct deposited into the bank account you have linked to your student account. The SAO is not able to deposit the award into your student account. If you have not received acceptance into your program and submitted your acceptance letter to the Study Abroad Office by the beginning of the NC State semester during which you will be studying abroad, you should expect to receive your check in the mail 3-4 weeks after providing proof of acceptance into your Study Abroad program.
Non-NC State Programs
You will need to submit a copy of the acceptance letter for your non-NC State program and complete a non-NCSU enrollment packet by the appropriate deadline in order to receive your scholarship award. You should also send an email to the Scholarship Administrator to let them know that you have submitted the appropriate paperwork. This email will alert our office to confirm that your acceptance and enrollment information is complete, and to initiate the check request. Scholarship checks will be issued 3-4 weeks after the SAO office has received your acceptance letter, but not sooner than one month prior to the beginning of the semester that you will be studying abroad. Please contact the scholarship administrator for the payment schedule. Please note that the check will be sent to your permanent address on file with the University or direct deposited into the bank account you have linked to your student account. The SAO is not able to transfer the award into your student account. If you have not received acceptance into your program and submitted your acceptance letter to the Study Abroad Office by the beginning of the NC State semester during which you will be studying abroad, you should expect to receive your check in the mail 3-4 weeks after providing proof of acceptance into your Study Abroad program.
Please send a note of thanks or a short report on your experience to the scholarship sponsor when you return from studying abroad. Thank you notes can be sent care of the Study Abroad Office, and we will forward them to the appropriate committee(s). Our scholarship funding is not guaranteed on an ongoing basis, and a letter would help us make future requests to donors. Also, upon your return you may be asked to help us spread the word about Study Abroad, and we hope you will volunteer to share your experiences with other students through our outreach programs.
