Academic Advising for Study Abroad

Students need your help in order to study abroad!  We have created some FAQs on study abroad for academic advisers.  Did you know that you can search for programs based on the fields of study available and language of instruction?  We hope that you'll also partner with us to integrate study abroad experiences into your curriculum.

What is Curriculum Integration in Study Abroad?

The NC State Study Abroad Office Curriculum Integration initiative strives to increase student access to degree-relevant study abroad experiences through effective academic collaboration.

  • Collaboration:  Weave study abroad into curriculum through partnerships with faculty, staff, and advisors.
  • Major-specific resources:  Develop major-specific materials highlighting why, when, where, and what courses.
  • Ownership:  Partner with faculty and advisors so that each department is confident talking about study abroad.
  • Intentionality:  Encourage deliberate, academically-focused program decisions among students.
  • Ease student anxiety:  Provide students with tailored information outlining a path for study abroad for their field of study.
  • Dynamic long-term investment:  As a long-term investment of the NC State Study Abroad Office, Curriculum Integration will evolve with both academic curricula and the internationalization of the university.
The foundational model of curriculum integration in study abroad was initiated by the University of Minnesota and has been applied across institutions, including NC State. See the University of Minnesota's Learning Abroad Center for more information: http://www.umabroad.umn.edu/professionals/curriculumintegration/general.php

What can you do?

  • Invite a peer presenter to speak to your class, highlighting why study abroad is important for students in your college and programs recommended by your college.
  • Tell students why you think study abroad is important: how will it enhance their degree?  And, how will it enhance their career?
  • Connect us with your academic advising team or to a faculty meeting for dialogue on study abroad in your curriculum.
  • Point students towards the resources available like the major-specific brochures and field of study search.
  • Help us to update your major/college-specific materials.
  • Pre-approve major courses for recommended study abroad programs

Whether you're fully engaged in the curriculum integration process or are just beginning, we would be glad to partner with you!
